Get Out Your Brushes People!

Now, I am not an advocate of adding stress before the holidays... or really of anything for that matter that detracts from being able to actually rest in the meaning of Christmas....

But painting with CeCe Caldwell's is not stressful... and you know you have that one piece that you have wanted to get to, and the relatives are coming for the holidays... oh, wait, that's me...

Well, using CeCe Caldwell's paint wax to repurpose and redesign your old pieces is so easy that there actually IS time to do a piece before Christmas.

This is the one I am going to do:  My dining room table that has been patiently waiting for it's makeover since I got it on Craigslist almost two years ago!

These are the before photos.  The second one features the lovely cracks, scratches, gouges etc on the table top.

On your mark, get set, paint!  I'll post when I am done... would love to see yours too:)

French Butter?

That is a bit what this yummy, neutral, yet warm buffet looks like to me.  I did it in CeCe Caldwell's Omaha Ochre and clear wax, with light distressing.

It is in great shape, and is looking for it's new home!  Love those curved front drawers!

Pillow Fest!

I am having a Pillow Fest!  I finished several pillows today, including this scrumptious feather Christmas pillow.  The fabric is a sort of softened canvas.  I stencilled it with CeCe Caldwell's Michigan Pine, and the trim just makes it all a bit decadent.

Finding Thanksgiving

There are seasons in life where it seems harder to see and feel that deep gratitude of soul for all that I have to be thankful for. I think we all go through those seasons at some point:  loss, serious illness, or even just the blahs.  There is still enough to be thankful for, it is just harder for me to grasp during those times.

During other seasons of life, reasons for gratitude seem to jump out at me in living color.  And when one season follows on the footsteps of the other, it is like the wonder of Spring, the poignant beauty of green buds coming up, the scent of promise in the air.

The past 30 days have been a mix of both at our house:  surprises both difficult and sweet.  In the midst of it all, I am grateful for so much;  the love of family and friends, the goodness of God, creativity, and the sweet moments in life.

"Rendre Grace" is French and roughly translates, "Give Thanks".  This sweet pillow is available at The Parker Shoppes.  I have one more in the works... and  I think I need to make one for myself.  Not only will it be great the holidays, it will serve as a year-round reminder to find Thanksgiving.

Back to painting....

Painting is such a zen, relaxing process for me.  I literally crave it.  My hubby is recovering from his surgery, and I am back in the groove.  It is like a sigh of relief picking up a brush again.

I picked up this original painting in it's outdated frame.  I am thinking it's final color will be CeCe Caldwell's Cinco Bayou Moss, but we'll see.  I did the first coat in Vermont Slate and it just freshened the painting up so much that I may stick with that...

I had to take a picture half way through the first coat because it was transforming the look so much.  I feel like old pieces also breath a sigh of relief when they get a makeover and a new purpose in life:)

Look at the difference already!

So what do you think?  Cinco Bayou Moss to bring out those greens, or stick with Vermont Slate?

What Do You Do with an Uncooperative Bat?

Tape him to the window!

I was unsuccessful in using graphite paper to trace this guy onto my burlap, and I don't trust myself to do it free-hand, so I taped the image and the burlap to the window so that the light would help me out and traced him:)

Then I painted it with CeCe Caldwell's Vermont Slate... the reclaimed frame too...
Now the cute little guy is just hanging around waiting for Halloween!

Boo... are you scared now?

Don't be!  These cute burlap pillows are easy to make, and will add some Halloween fun to your decor without to much of a walk on the dark side!  Who says Halloween decor can't be sweet?

Supplies needed for this project:
Burlap
Lining Fabric (Optional)
Polyfill stuffing
CeCe Caldwell's Kissimmee Orange paint
Letter Stencils
Stencil Brush
Sewing Machine
Pins
Tan Thread
Needle

To get started, decide what size you want your pillow to be and cut your fabric accordingly
(and lining fabric if you use it... I did, but I'm picky:)  .  Leave yourself a decent seam allowance since burlap frays easily.  I cut my pillow front and back at 10" x 14".

Next cut some strips for the ruffle if you want to use it.  I cut 3 strips that were 2.25" x 30" each. I overlapped the ends by about .25" and zigzagged them together to form one long strip.  I wanted to gather the burlap, but I used a fairly heavy weight burlap, it just would not gather... so I changed game plan to loose 'pleats' for ruffling.  You can either pin these and then sew them down, or just sew as you go.  I didn't want them too even as I wanted more of a ruffled, rather than a pleated, look.

Ok, on to painting!  Place something paint impervious and flat under the front side of your pillow face.Lay your stencils out, grab the stencil brush and 'blot' your paint on with straight up and down motions.  In order to prevent the paint from seeping under the edges of the stencil, make sure you hold your stencil firmly in place, and use a somewhat 'dry' brush. I just used one good coat. When it is dry, you can begin to assemble your pillow

.  The insides should face each other, with the ruffle in between, facing down, so that all of the edges line up.  If you are trying this project, you probably know how to sew a least a bit.  And, so you probably know that not getting the ruffles caught in the corner is really the only challenging bit of the sewing part of this project.  Make sure you fold the part of the ruffle that is facing down into your pillow in towards each other.  Pin your pillow together, overlapping the ruffle where it meets (just overlap it a few inches and cut it off straight across on the end.).  Make sure to leave a pretty good unstitched length on the end or bottom when you sew it.  Burlap is not super easy to turn and you don't want to fray the fabric by tugging on it too much when you do turn it.

Alright.... it's coming together!

Not to stitch it up and turn it.  Remember that seam allowance!  After sewing it, gently turn it right side out, working with the corners until they take shape.

Now it is ready to stuff.  Just grab some handfuls of the poly-fill and go to to town!

To finish it up, pin your open edged together and hand stitch them shut.  Tidy the pillow up by trimming off stray fibers... and voila... you are done.  Bring on the trick or treaters!

It's This!

This is the two tiered table that I was fixing the stem on in my last post.  I had been wanting to introduce CeCe Caldwell's Destin Gulf Green and Cinco Bayou Moss to each other... and they hit it off right away!  I expect to see them together many times in the future:)  When it's right, it's right!

This table was asking for a bit of a rustic, weathered finish, and that is what it got with bits of Cinco Bayou Moss peeking out from all that lovely Destin Gulf Green. I love happy furniture:)

What the heck is that?

But of course, it is a lovely old mahogany table getting a little wobble on the top shelf fixed.  Now this may look a tad unconventional... but I am a use what you have on hand kind of girl... and you have seen than same pot put to use in the past:)

Ok, so the explanation:  The top layer of the table had a wobble.  It was not due to the screws being loose at the plate that attaches the stem to the top.  So a little wiggling later, I discovered that it was due to the stem itself being loose in the plate.  That calls for some glue.

Now, I am not a big fan of Gorilla Glue for furniture... precisely because of that puffy ring you see in the photo... and the fact that you could pretty much take a belt sander to it and not be able to smooth it out for aesthetics.  But, this is the underside of the table, and it will never show... and the Gorilla Glue will hold it really well.

The challenge with a table top is getting it level.  So bring on the plywood which creates a platform for all three legs... and a cooking pot full of water that I set on the plywood and moved around until the little bubble on the level indicated that I had it. (Unless you are using a level that provides feedback on multi-dimensional leveling, you will want to set the level in different spots to get an overall read on it.)

Looking forward to the glue drying so i can get painting on this.... I'm thinking possibly CeCe Caldwell's Destin Gulf Green... I'll post when I finish it.  Have a great Sunday!

A Longing for the Sea...

A longing for some time at the ocean prompted me to paint this sweet little table in CeCe Caldwell's Nantucket Spray. I can just see the cottage in my mind, smell the ocean, and imagine sitting in a comfy chair with a good book... and setting my morning coffee on this.  Ahhh... longing..

The table is available at The Parker Shoppes.

CeCe Caldwell's is in Parker!

If you have been waiting to start your painting project, now is the time!  The entire line-up of CeCe Caldwell's delicious, Zero VOC paints are at The Parker Shoppes... including all the newly released colors!

I call this color Hennessey Hay:  It is equal parts Cinco Bayous Moss and Texas Prarie.  The back panel is done in Vintage White.  A gentleman walked by while I was painting it in the store and asked "Why don't I smell paint fumes?" Because there are none with CeCe's all natural paints!!

What Can You Do with a Couple of Samples and a Couple of Hours?

This is one sample pot of CeCe Caldwell's Spring Hill Green, and one sample pot of CeCe's Clear Wax.  One square of fabric.  One brush, and one piece of cheesecloth.  See what you can turn this into in just a few hours...

Add one garage sale chair...

Sorry for the blurry pic!  Here's a more clear one... shows the condition of the chair;)

Add two coats of paint.  Wait for them both to dry.  Take an old, damp washcloth and "distress" your chair wherever you want it to look aged.  Add one coat of clear wax.  Staple the fabric to the seat and reattach... and voila!

Sweet Green Chair!

The 'Adrian' Desk in Smoky Mountain Gray

This desk is walnut, and overall was in great shape.. just a tiny bit of tlc needed prior to painting.  I painted it in CeCe Caldwell's Smoky Mountain Gray... and I love the color for this piece, they just go together.  I replaced the hardware, and ended up really liking that too.  It's available!

I distressed it very lightly, just enough to give a nod to it's vintage past.

I like the way the new hardware echos the shape of the base of the desk.

The 'Jill' Console Table

This table is a rustic pine, previously unfinished that has had a makeover in CeCe Caldwell's Santa Fe Turquoise and sealed with Satin Finish.  It is so fresh!  Glass knobs add elegance and sweetness... I love bringing elements together like this.

Check Out what Gail did with a 4oz Sample of CeCe Caldwell's!

Gail, the owner of Not 2 Shabby in Littleton (3625 W Bowles Ave, 80123) did this great bench in 1 coat of Vermont Slate:  She said that she had paint left at the bottom of the 4oz sample jar when she was done!  Sample jars are $8 each, and a great way to try new colors or do small projects.  The bench is for sale too at the store:)

We might have to change his name to 'Spot'

This is Oscar, sporting a spot of CeCe Caldwell's Santa Fe Turquoise on his tail... just maybe somebody wagged on a piece I was working on???

That's 5lbs of love that just wants to be at my feet all the time (he's a Mama's boy:).

Today he did his best to do some faux painting on a desk I am working on in Smoky Mountain Gray.  Now I think that would clash... he already looks like he has been dipped in Vermont Slate, and the Santa Fe gives a nice little contrast, but adding a third color into the mix would just be "too  much fashion" as our oldest daughter used to say when she was a wee peanut.

I guess I just need to admit it!

Apparently I am 'one of those women' who are always in love.  Don't tell my husband!  What can I do when my affections are captured?  I am helpless to resist!
Last week, I was deeply, and I felt abidingly, in love with CeCe Caldwell's Vermont Slate while I was painting 'Jane', a lovely old family buffet that was entrusted to me for a makeover.

I love Vermont Slate, I do.  But today, well, I only got paint on one surface of this rustic Pine console table... and what is a girl to do?  I am in love again... this time with Santa Fe Turquoise.  I fell fast and hard.  I guess it can't be helped!

Sighhhhhh....

Make your own chalkboard... or buy this one:)

Try this at home!  I just finished up this chalkboard today and I like how it came out:)

For the frame, I went to a craft store and bought a clearance custom frame (so big and inexpensive... probably one they had done for an order that didn't work out!)

I then went on over to the local big box store and asked those nice men working there to cut the sheet of 1/4" sanded plywood that I purchased to the exact size... love that!

Next primer on the plywood... grey is a good base color primer.  Then two coats of chalkboard paint.

Then the fun part!  I painted the frame in layers of CeCe Caldwell's Alaskan Tundra Green, Memphis Blue and then back to Alaskan Tundra.  I let it dry for a bit... and then the even more fun part...

I took an old washcloth, dampened it, and used it to rub off some of the paint where I wanted wood or layers to show through.  (You can just wash and re-use the washcloth.)  I let it dry again, and then sealed it with some of CeCe's lovely clear wax and Satin Finish (quickest thing ever!) and voila... Check out the great detailing this gives you!

Last step was to seriously hot glue it into the frame from the back... get it good, because you don't want it coming loose when you erase the chalk.  And done!  Try it!

If you need paint, you can pick it up at Not 2 Shabby in Littleton, or email me at reclamationdesigns@gmail.com to order by mail.

This one is available, and I have other frames in waiting if you would like a different color!

Sneak Preview of Jane...

This is Jane, a stately buffet newly redone in CeCe Caldwell's Vermont Slate with clear and dark wax.  No distressing.  Jane is not distressed... she is serene... and a bit playful with her fresh white hardware.

I'll post her glamour shots when she gives me the word that she's ready:)  Jane doesn't like to be rushed.
